Concerns about rising inequality are making headlines all over the world, from America and Europe to China. Yet current debates and policy proposals tend to focus on the relatively recent past, neglecting the very long sweep of history and the lessons it may hold. This conference will survey the evolution and determinants of resource inequality from the Stone Age to the present. Contributors will be drawn from a variety of disciplines such as History, Political Science, Economics, and Anthropology. Papers will focus on the big picture, presenting both case studies and broader surveys designed to showcase the different types of evidence that can be brought to bear on this topic and to review the analytical and methodological challenges and prospects of the transdisciplinary study of inequality on a global scale and in the very long term.
