Vortrag

The European Union and the Council of Europe initiatives in education have made a significant contribution to the development of educational guidelines and programs for both language learners and language teachers. They all strongly voice the need to enhance teacher and learner autonomy by promoting among other things the concept of reflectivity and self-assessment in both language teaching and learning contexts as the key to the development of autonomy. This aim is very well-reflected in the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), which was created to assist trainees in their professional development and autonomy.

This presentation looks at how a group of foreign language pre-service teachers understand teacher autonomy and discusses the factors which contribute to this understanding. It also presents the limitations and constraints on teacher autonomy as pointed out by the trainees themselves. This awareness and understanding of trainees’ perceptions of teacher autonomy can contribute to improvement in training programs implemented at various FL teacher training institutions. There seems to be a special need to focus more explicitly on developing understanding of the various dimensions of teacher autonomy and ways of achieving it, as teacher autonomy is at the heart of modern approaches to education.
