A currently influential approach to the study of electoral behaviour emphasizes valence voting.

Geoffrey Evans demonstrates empirically the limitations of this intrinsically endogenous approach to modelling vote choice and proceeds to elaborate a top down model of contextual cleavage shaping in which parties create patterns of choice and participation. A key focus is on the political marginalization of working class/poor/less highly educated citizens in a majoritarian electoral system and the creation of a new class cleavage: between those who participate and those who don't.
