Vortrag
The manipulation and control of single photons in cavities has been a very long term project, extending over decades. It has been made possible by the continuous support of the institutions which have trusted me and?by the exceptional colleagues and students I have been privileged to work with. I will recall the main stages?of this story and insist upon the crucial role of places and people in the life of a scientist. In conclusion, I will discuss how our work is now being extended into other areas of physics and I will make some remarks about the importance of blue sky research, in a time when research driven by societal needs is being strongly emphasised.
