Vortrag

This talk will focus on the occasion of Verdi conducting his "Aida". Verdi had always conducted his works and had done this in various ways, but his conducting "Aida" marked a radical change. The change in the conception of music called for a change in its performance: one necessitated the other.

The circulation of Meyerbeer’s operas in Italy had made clear that Italian theatres were not prepared for this repertoire, a fact which was confirmed by the arrival of an opera such as "Don Carlos". As a result, Verdi felt personally obliged to reform the system of production in Italy’s opera houses.
