Monasteries of Late Byzantine Constantinople

in the Light of the Ottoman Survey of 1455

Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik der Universität Wien
Postgasse 7/1/3, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

The first Ottoman survey of Istanbul, completed in December 1455, is an invaluable document which registers the buildings and population of the city two and a half years after its conquest by Mehmed II. Of the survey's two sections, devoted respectively to Galata and Istanbul, this lecture will focus on the Istanbul section, in which churches and monasteries take up a prominent place among the buildings that are mentioned. Using the evidence provided on monasteries by the survey of 1455, the lecture aims to shed new light on the sacred topography of late Byzantine Constantinople .
