Vortrag

The monastery of Iviron, i.e. of the Iberians, on Mount Athos was founded in 980 by John Tornike and Euthymios. During the 11th century, it became an important center of education and production for Georgian scholars, however, after the 13th century the influx of Georgian monks was inhibited by the conquest of the Caucasus region by the Mongols and the Turks and the monastery gradually fell into Greek hands. The presentation will focus on the relations between the monastery of Iviron and the Georgians from its beginnings until the 20th century, focusing mostly on new findings concerning Iviron´s dependency in Georgia after the 17th century. Despite the fact that it was quite large compared to similar dependencies in the lands of the Ottoman Empire and the Danubian Principalities, there has been no relative study until now that would offer a larger or smaller picture of the dependency's existence. This is mostly due to the fact that the 19th-century archive of Iviron monastery is only now undergoing systematical classification and cataloguing allowing for an extensive research on the relative documents in the hope to shed light on the property of the dependency, its abbots, its relations with local authorities, and everyday life.
