Das Interuniversitäre Forschungsnetzwerk Elfriede Jelinek der Universität Wien und der MUK und das Elfriede Jelinek-Forschungszentrum organisieren im Rahmen ihrer Internationalen Veranstaltungsreihe WELT.AUTORIN.JELINEK am 7.5.2026 den „Jelinek-Tag“ in Paris mit dem Titel „GESCHLECHT & DEMOKRATIE“. Der „Jelinek-Tag“ findet im Österreichischen Kulturforum Paris in Kooperation mit der Forschungsgruppe CEREG statt. Die Internationale Veranstaltungsreihe WELT.AUTORIN.JELINEK, die aus Anlass von Elfriede Jelineks 80. Geburtstag stattfindet und aus sieben „Jelinek-Tagen“ im globalen Raum besteht, befasst sich mit Elfriede Jelinek als „Weltautorin“, die die aktuellen globalen antidemokratischen Entwicklungen mit Fokus auf die Position von Frauen* analysiert und deren Analysen weltweit wahrgenommen werden. Mit internationalen Wissenschaftler*innen, Übersetzer*innen und Künstler*innen wird aufgezeigt, wie Jelineks Werke weltweit Wirkungskraft haben, wie sie Frauen* global bestärken und wie die jeweilige politische Situation in Hinblick auf Frauen* mit jener der anderen am Schwerpunkt beteiligten Ländern vergleichbar ist. Der „Jelinek-Tag“ in Paris befasst sich mit der Position von Frauen* im Kontext weltweiter demokratischer Erosionsprozesse sowie erstarkender autoritärer und antifeministischer Bewegungen. Im Zentrum steht, wie Jelineks Texte patriarchale Machtverhältnisse, Geschlechterhierarchien und strukturelle Ausschlüsse in zunehmend illiberalen Demokratien sichtbar machen und kritisch reflektieren. Es wird diskutiert, inwiefern ihre literarische Praxis transnationale feministische Empowerment-Prozesse anstößt und internationale Resonanzräume eröffnet. Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen aus Brasilien, Frankreich, Österreich, Polen, Spanien und den USA treten in Keynotes, Gesprächen und und einer Lesung aus Jelineks „FaustIn and out“ in Austausch und beleuchten Jelineks Bedeutung für aktuelle Debatten um Demokratie und Geschlecht. It does this by exploring how communal murder and betrayal intersected with nation-building in the newly independent Slovakia during World War II. The authority of the fascist regime centered in Bratislava hinged on appeasing not only Hitler but also civilian populations of the nation’s heterogenous eastern borderlands, especially local elites, such as priests, doctors, and teachers, as well as the rural masses. Scholarship on fascism has either focused on state actors operating from urban centers to orchestrate coercion or explored local mechanisms of violence at the grassroot level. This book, in contrast, foregrounds the center’s dynamic relationship to the periphery, showing how this relationship was forged, how it was maintained, and how, ultimately, Christian nationalism operated as the lure and political strategy that brought differently positioned actors together to broker deals over resources and power accrued through the co-enactment of genocide by a broad coalition of perpetrators on the ground. Ultimately, this little-known chapter of Holocaust history can help us better understand how collaborations between elite and popular formations of Christian nationalism can pave the way for ethnic cleansing across different territories and, one might argue, times. About the author Hana Kubátová is a historian exploring how societies live with – and narrate – compromised pasts. She is Associate Professor at Charles University and currently a senior research fellow at the Simon Wiesenthal Institute.

Abstract

In this presentation, Lucía Cavallero discusses her latest book, in which she analyses how finance governs the life of the majorities in the name of freedom. The author shows how the notion of freedom is central to contemporary financial capitalism, driven by the new right and led by corporations that concentrate wealth in algorithmic and extractivist forms.

Based on her most recent research, developed in the context of Argentina and Latin America, Cavallero examines the intertwining of neoliberalism, authoritarianism, and anti-feminism, which finds in the so-called ‘financial freedom’ a fetish concept, both grandiloquent and perverse expression, amid accelerating impoverishment and social cruelty.

Lastly, she will address the struggles of the Argentinian transfeminist movement facing the rise of the far right and their resistance in defence of other forms of life, community and freedom.

The presentation will be given in Spanish and translated with consecutive interpretation to English.

Lucía Cavallero is a sociologist and researcher at the University of Buenos Aires. Her research focuses among other topics on debt and gender. She is an activist within Ni Una Menos, a feminist movement that struggles against gender-based violence. She is co-author of “A Feminist Reading of Debt” and “The Home as Laboratory: Finance, Housing, and Feminist Struggle”.

The lecture is organised by the research group Gender and Politics (IPW).

“Ocean reanalyses and their use in support of climate and ocean dynamics”

Ocean reanalyses reconstruct historical ocean states by combining ocean circulation models with observational data through data assimilation algorithms. Their key advantage lies in providing temporally and spatially complete ocean coverage, enabling the study of ocean dynamical processes — such as large-scale circulation, heat transport, and long-term climate trends — that would otherwise be inaccessible due to observational limitations.

At CNR-ISMAR, we have been developing long-period ocean reanalyses extending back to the 1960s and 1870s, complementing reconstructions produced by other international centers. A distinctive aspect of our approach is the use of large ensembles, which allow us to systematically quantify uncertainties in our ocean estimates.

During this presentation, we will outline our ocean reanalysis development activities and showcase how these reconstructions are being used to advance our understanding of ocean dynamics.

Big Tech companies are not merely large corporations; they are political actors and economic planners. Their deep pockets and control over social media and personal data are only the surface of what truly explains their dominance. Their power lies in their dominance over today’s control technologies deployed within and beyond the tech sector. Their power grows as artificial intelligence becomes widely adopted and emerges as the mainstream method of invention and creation, one that undermines people’s capacity to think. How did we arrive at a world in which such a handful of megacorporations from the United States -and to a lesser extent, from China- control the production and use of the technologies that define contemporary capitalism? What is different in US Big Tech’s coalition with the Trump administration in comparison to the historical interplay between US corporate and political power? How does this transformation affect the digital peripheries: Latin America, Africa, and even Europe? Who are the peripheries’ local accomplices of digital dependency? What are the ideological discourses and networks of economic power? How are nature’s extractivism and data and knowledge extractivisms connected? How is work being transformed in a world in which new technologies are a powerful mechanism of control and indoctrination? And why is it that, faced with the need to build an alternative, attempts to expand digital sovereignty equally fail? These are the key questions that structure this talk.

East Central Europe is generally seen as a region that produces refugees rather than providing solutions to their plight. People fleeing poverty, war, border conflicts, ethnic cleansing, genocide, and political persecution contribute to the region’s troubled image. Drawing on research from the ERC Consolidator project “Unlikely Refuge?,” this talk challenges this widespread understanding and examines the reception, protection, and aid (or lack thereof) provided to refugees in East Central Europe during the 20th century. The talk will also address the history of refugee protection in state socialist countries, a topic that is often marginalized in contrast to the history of the 1951 Refugee Convention and the “Western” refugee regime. It will reflect on the need to expand our understanding of national and international refugee regimes, arguing that we must consider refugee regimes in the plural to provide a basis for writing a truly global history of refugees. 21. Gerade die Jahrzehnte um 1900, die als ‚Keimphase‘ der heutigen europäischen Wohlfahrtsstaaten gelten, waren jedoch eine Zeit massiver Migrationsbewegungen. Dies warf unweigerlich die Frage auf: wer sollte von den expandierenden sozialen Sicherungssystemen profitieren, wer sollte ausgeschlossen bleiben? Oft hat die Forschung vermutet, dass der Aufstieg nationaler Wohlfahrtsstaaten den Ausschluss transnationaler Migrantinnen und Migranten von sozialen Rechten angetrieben, die Differenz Inländer/Ausländer also verschärft habe. Basierend auf Ergebnissen des Projekts „The Borders of the Welfare State: Migration, Social Rights and Expulsion (1850–1933)”, argumentiert dieser Vortrag, dass es so einfach nicht war. Mit Fokus auf das Deutsche Reich wird gezeigt, dass das moderne Versicherungsprinzip insbesondere auch Nicht-Staatsangehörige weit günstiger stellte als die traditionelle Armenfürsorge – allerdings zugleich neue Abgrenzungspro-bleme hervorbrachte. Gestützt auf einen breiten Quellenfundus, diskutiert der Vortrag die ambivalenten Interdependenzen von Sozial- und Migrationspolitik an der Schwelle zum 20. Jahrhundert. Abstract This presentation offers insight into the work of maiz, an autonomous centre by and for migrant women and a self-organised collective that has been active in Linz since 1994. Rooted in an anti-racist and transfeminist perspective, maiz’s work is committed to improving the living conditions of migrant women* in Austria by creating spaces of resistance, collective care, political education, and collective imagination toward transformation. maiz feminist practices are grounded in daily experiences with migrant women, sex workers, trans and gender-diverse people, Muslim women, Black and women of colour — those who sustain much of the world’s care and cleaning work while remaining systematically invisible and marginalised by intersecting systems of oppression. These lived realities underpin our critique of the colonial roots and racialized systems that structure labour regimes, migration policies and gender-based violence. At the same time, we confront the persistence of bourgeois and white feminisms that reproduce inequality in order to maintain privilege, often silencing, appropriating or weaponizing racialized and migrant women’s struggles. Despite contradictions and manufactured scarcity, we move forward through practices of solidarity built and sustained on purposeful struggle and collective responsibility from which we nurture dreams of collective liberation. This demands radical, life-affirming practices that reclaim imagination, tenderness, bodies, languages, and ways of knowing. About the speaker Letícia Carneiro (she/her - Brazil) was born and raised in Brazil. As a privileged child in a country of contradictions, she studied social communication and law at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), later earning a Master's in Philosophy of Law. In Brazil, she worked as a lawyer and researcher before moving to Austria in 2018. Since 2016, she has been mothering twins while unlearning hegemony and cultivating hope and generosity. She joined maiz in 2019, a space that has since shaped her understanding of relationships, justice, and solidarity. At maiz, Letícia is part of the sex & work area as well as the management team.

Staatenlosigkeit wird häufig primär als juristisches Problem verstanden. Die Forschung von Victoria Reitter zeigt hingegen, dass sie wesentlich durch alltägliche Verwaltungspraxis in staatlichen Behörden hervorgebracht und stabilisiert wird. Am Beispiel Österreichs, wo trotz internationaler Verpflichtungen kein Verfahren zur Feststellung von Staatenlosigkeit existiert, analysiert sie, wie Beamt*innen mit dieser rechtlichen Lücke umgehen. Auf Grundlage konstruktivistischer Grounded Theory und qualitativ-ethnografischer Methoden entwickelt ihre Arbeit das Konzept der „behördlich-institutionellen Arbeit“ und zeigt, dass Beamt*innen das Rechtsvakuum auf drei zentrale Weisen nicht nur verwalten, sondern aktiv reproduzieren. Staatenlosigkeit erscheint damit nicht als juristische Anomalie der Staatsbürger*innenschaft, sondern als Produkt institutionalisierter Verwaltungspraxis. Victoria Reitter ist ÖAW-Postdoc-Track-Stipendiatin am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Wien und Researcherin im Bereich „Migration – Interne Grenzregime – Bürokratie“ am Ilse-Arlt-Institut für Soziale Inklusionsforschung an der University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten. Ihre künftige Forschung widmet sich der Frage, wie Nationalstaaten Migration zunehmend über den Zugang zu Rechten und sozialstaatlichen Leistungen steuern, und welche Rolle bürokratische Praktiken bei der Strukturierung sozialer Ungleichheit spielen. Im Rahmen des Forschungskolloquiums stellen jedes Semester Wissenschafter*innen des Instituts für Soziologie ihre Projekte und Forschungsthemen in einer Präsenzveranstaltung in Seminarraum 3 vor. Although Technical Art History (TAH) has existed as an established specialisation within art history since the 1970s, when it gained prominence as part of the New Art Histories that challenged dominant art historical narratives and methodologies, it is still often confused with technical studies, conservation science, visual and material culture. While Technical Art History may overlap and incorporate one or several aspects of these other specialisms, its unique opportunity lies in its interdisciplinary, transnational and inclusive approach. TAH fosters a holistic understanding of an artwork’s existence as material object embodying an image with a physical history. An art object’s materiality is intricately tied to artistic intent, to concepts of creativity, and to larger historical-theoretical frameworks. In the last decade, important advances have been made in the realm of theorising materiality and overcoming the “hylomorphic model,” with close visual examination of an artwork being the starting point for a technical-art historical study that extends to a contextual and theory-based interpretation of these material-based insights, thus transcending factual information-gathering from scientific analysis or visual examination methods. Materialising theory, on the other hand, has remained a somewhat elusive aim, the challenges and rewards of which we would like to place at the centre of manifold explorations in the summer semester of 2026. The series will consist of 12 lectures delivered by practitioners who have either made significant contributions to Technical Art History or who work in areas of dialogic, relevant intersection, in particular art historians, curators, anthropologists and conservators. Special emphasis will be placed on the in-depth discussion of select art works, covering a broad range of time periods, geographic regions and materials/media. Questions we hope to address are: How can dualistic conceptions of materiality be superseded? How can Technical Art History evolve further as field of research? How can theory and material/practice be further intertwined? What are the pre-conditions, limits and possibilities of a transdisciplinary approach? How can an engagement with material theory inform the work of academics and museum professionals alike? What new methodologies does TAH afford us, and why does it not have to begin or end with science? Which role do documentary sources found in archives and on the internet play in this type of research?

The Frontiers in Spatial Sciences Circle U.-Lecture series: ‘Natural Hazards, Vulnerability and Disasters: Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ takes place as part of the Extension Curriculum for Bachelor students and the Compulsory Module Geography Pool for Master students at the Department of Geography and Regional Research at the University of Vienna. In the summer semester of 2026, the lecture series is an official Circle U. course, open to incoming BA and MA students from Circle U. partner universities for online attendance. The objective of this lecture series is twofold: firstly, to provide in-depth knowledge of various areas of natural hazards, vulnerability and disasters; and secondly, to strengthen an interdisciplinary perspective. The first session will introduce students to the definitions, terminologies and relevant concepts, thus providing a foundation for the subsequent sessions. Each subsequent session will consist of lectures of approximately 45-60 minutes in length, delivered by invited experts from a range of different disciplines, such as geography, climate and environmental sciences, social sciences and law. The experts will present their individual viewpoints and topics on natural hazards, vulnerability and disasters. Consequently, students will learn about different theoretical and practical approaches, as well as the implications of natural hazards on the environment and society. This lecture series explores musical cultures across the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia, examining these regions as interconnected soundscapes shaped by mobility, devotional practices, and political transformations. Drawing on current work in ethnomusicology, sound studies, and historical musicology, the series highlights diverse traditions, ranging from Islamic recitation and liturgy to Armenian liturgical and choral music, shared Turkish–Armenia folk repertoires, and the courtly, urban, and Sufi musical cultures of the Turko-Iranian world. Further contributions address the historical and contemporary study of Ottoman music (including recent advances in the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae), the musical traditions of Badakhshan and northern Afghanistan, Central Asian art music such as Shashmaqam, and modern genres from popular music to heavy metal in Turkey. The program also includes perspectives on musical life in Qajar and Pahlavi Iran.

Complementing the lectures, the series will feature a concert offering direct engagement with selected repertoires.

Medicine has never been a purely scientific enterprise. „Nach der Scheidung“ (FWF, PAT 3520624) untersucht am Beispiel des Erzherzogtums Österreich unter der Enns, wie die Lebensrealitäten von Frauen und Männer aussahen, deren Ehen zwischen 1750 und 1850 von Tisch und Bett geschieden wurden. Wo wohnten sie nach der Scheidung? Wie finanzierten sie ihr Leben? Wechselten sie ihre Arbeit oder setzten sie die Tätigkeit fort, die sie schon während der Ehe ausgeübt hatten? Gingen sie neue Partnerschaften ein? Wie gestaltete sich die weitere Beziehung des geschiedenen Paars? Hielten sie sich an das gerichtliche Urteil bzw. an die Vereinbarungen des Scheidungsvergleiches, oder mussten sie Regelungen zum Unterhalt, zur Vermögensteilung oder der Obsorge der Kinder gerichtlich einklagen? Und nicht zuletzt interessiert uns, an wen geschiedene Frauen und Männer ihr Vermögen am Lebensende vermachten. Zur Beantwortung dieser Forschungsfragen haben wir derzeit etwas über 60 Ehepaare aus vorangegangenen FWF-Forschungsprojekten ausgewählt, deren Ehe zwischen 1750 und 1850 geschieden wurde und deren Scheidungsvergleiche bzw. Scheidungsurteile in den Akten überliefert sind. Zu den geschiedenen Frauen und Männern recherchieren wir Eheverträge, auch aus vorangegangenen und nachfolgenden Ehen, Gerichtsverfahren sowie Testamente und Verlassenschaftsabhandlungen. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist es, die geschiedenen Frauen und Männer sozial zu verorten. Faktoren wie Alter, soziale Herkunft und Wohnort, aber auch allfällige Eheerfahrungen und Kinder – aus vorangegangenen Beziehungen und aus der geschiedenen Ehe – werden berücksichtigt.

In the next talk, Jane Russell KC (Lawyer from London) will discuss her experiences with contemporary cases in UK law that deal with rights of trans* people. She will give insight into her practice, and reflect on anti-trans* presuppositions and British terfism that become evident in these court cases.

As a lawyer, Jane Russell KC has represented the interests of the British trans* community in some of the most high profile cases of the past decade: Bailey v Stonewall and Garden Court (2022), involving the co-founder of the prominent anti-trans lobbying group LGB Alliance; Forstater v CGD (2019), involving the founder of Sex Matters, and which established that “gender critical views” are protected as a ‘philosophical belief’ under the Equality Act 2010; recently, Peggie vs Fife Health Board and Dr. B Upton (2025), which considered whether a nurse had been subject to discrimination by virtue of being expected to share a changing room with a trans* colleague. With her legal expertise and personal insights into the fight for trans* rights inside the courtroom, Jane Russell is ideally placed to shed light on how powerful groups use the law to target trans* people, and how trans* rights can be protected by the court.

There will be a Q&A after the talk, as well as snacks and drinks!

We are especially happy if those join the talk who are versed in the legal situation of trans* people in Austria, so we can have a fruitful discussion on similarities, differences, and possible strategies for action. But: no prior legal knowledge required!!!

Artificial intelligence is changing not only the tools, but the underlying conditions of academic teaching: how students practice, generate texts and solutions, receive feedback - and how we can assess performance validly. In this talk, I outline established findings from educational research on effective learning (clarity of learning goals, active practice, quality of feedback, misconceptions, motivation, collaboration, interaction) which, in my view, are now more relevant than ever. From these, I derive how course and curriculum design can be realigned for the AI era. The focus is on three levers: assessment (validity, authenticity, assessment formats between product and process), feedback (targeted, timely, learning-effective; AI as support), and competencies (which abilities graduates should demonstrably master in the future). The second part is designed as a discussion: what adjustments to curricula, assessment architecture, policies, and faculty development are needed to improve teaching sustainably, rather than merely reacting with AI-driven ad hoc solutions? No one, however, will have final answers. A light buffet will be offered before the lecture at around 16:00.

They allow us to gauge, symptomatically, what societies happen to be concerned with, and their narrative and aesthetic form also provides a unique symbolic form that allows audiences to think through both political and philosophical questions. The spate of postapocalyptic and posthuman series currently streaming is a case in point: In deeply divided and polarized societies, they offer a site where questions of communal bonds and social futures can be discussed. Christian Krug's talk will focus specifically on Westworld (HBO, 2016–22) and Pluribus (Apple TV, since 2025). These shows employ a 'sentimental politics' to project, or reject, communal futures after the 'end of humanity' (as we know it). Finally, Krug will explore the various ways these shows, frequently labelled and commodified as 'Quality' or 'Prestige' TV series, may be analyzed within the field of contemporary cultural studies.

The lecture examines a specific phenomenon in Israeli liberal discourse: the silencing of people who publicly condemn Israeli actions in Gaza by others who themselves recognise that these actions are wrong. Combining autobiographical experience with analysis of online discourse and activist testimony, the talk portrays a "sorry, but" mechanism. The "sorry" acknowledges moral awareness of wrongdoing, while the "but" denies the implications. A key driver of this dynamic is the collective trauma following October 7th. Trauma leads to emotional withdrawal, limits engagement, and prevents acknowledging the suffering of others. Trauma and denial thus reinforce each other. Yael Hashiloni-Dolev is Full Professor of Sociology at Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheva. She has been the university president's advisor on gender equity (2023-2025), co-president of the Society for the History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science (2018-2021), a member of the National Council on Bioethics (2013-2021), and a member of the Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equity at the Council for Higher Education. She works at the complex interface of sociology, family, bioethics, health and illness with gender and repro-technologies, and recently edited, with Sharon Orshalimy, the collection: "A Body of One's Own: Medicine, Sex and Gender" (2025).

The counterinsurgency quickly turned into a state-led campaign of ethnic cleansing that resulted in the killing, deportation, and rape of thousands of Albanian civilians. While it is estimated that over 20,000 women were victims of sexual violence during the war, for nearly two decades after its end, few survivors have come forward to publicly discuss what they endured. In The Strongest Link, Anna Di Lellio and Garentina Kraja aim to break that silence by presenting an oral history of women who survived weaponized rape during the Kosovo War. In their own voices, twenty women describe the war's terror, as well as the nightmares that still haunt them today. Through these narratives, readers are given a glimpse into what it's like to be a woman whose life has been altered and undone by a violent regime, war, and patriarchal rules. We see how these women suffered, but also how they exhibited immense bravery and an unflagging dedication to their families and communities. Di Lellio and Kraja contextualize these narratives within a history of state repression, ethnic cleansing, and lack of justice. By weaving these women's stories together and placing them within a chronological storyline, these stories can be read as one might listen to a choir: Each woman's unique voice and story can be heard, but their power lies in a shared song, a story of courage and strength. In this presentation, I reflect critically on Black, Decolonial and/or Global South-centred feminist critiques to Early Social Reproduction approaches (ESRA) and Social Reproduction Theory (SRT), with the objective of mapping points of dialogue and interplay that may move us towards a common feminist horizon. First, I will sketch some of the continuities between ESRA and analyses focused on racial capitalism and/or on the racialisation of reproduction, in relation to understandings of primitive accumulation and value-generation, extraction and exploitation. Secondly, I will reflect on the linkages between SRT and intersectional feminism centering class. Based on the above, and in line with recent radical analyses of care and agrarian change, I will argue that to be inclusive of gendered experiences worldwide, analyses of social reproduction must centre the home as well as the colony and land as structuring forces of regimes of social reproduction. Overall, through ‘pluralising social reproduction approaches’ we can develop a theoretical and political agenda aimed at decolonising productivist approaches to global capitalism and development process.

Die Geschichte der Menschenrechte und der Demokratie ist ein wichtiges Anliegen der Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien. Gerald Stourzh, einer der führenden Experten auf diesem Gebiet, hat sie hier in Forschung und Lehre verankert und international wichtige Impulse gesetzt. In den jährlichen Gerald Stourzh-Vorlesungen zur Geschichte der Menschenrechte und der Demokratie, die in Zusammenarbeit mit den Forschungsschwerpunkten „Demokratie und Menschenrechte" sowie „Diktaturen – Gewalt – Genozide“ gehalten werden, stellen prominente ForscherInnen neue Ansätze und Ergebnisse zur Diskussion. Aufnahmen und schriftliche Ausarbeitungen der Vorträge werden auf der Homepage der Gerald Stourzh-Vorlesungen veröffentlicht.

Abstract: Democracy has long been regarded as a vehicle of emancipation, focussed on voting rights that were originally granted to adult males, considered to be sufficiently respectable, and then extended over the course of the twentieth century to women, immigrants and other sections of the population. That perception of democracy as a spreading pool of participation is understandable. But it marginalises the durable inequalities of democracy. Foremost among these has been the enduring gendered inequality within European democracy in terms of participation, power, and office-holding. In this lecture, I therefore wish to understand this phenomenon not as an imperfection of democracy, but as the expression of the endurance of a male understanding of political citizenship.

Martin Conway ist Professor of Contemporary European History sowie MacLellan-Warburg Fellow und Tutor in History am Balliol College der University of Oxford. Er forscht zur Geschichte Europas seit den 1930er Jahren, zuletzt vor allem zur vergleichenden Geschichte der Demokratie und den Auswirkungen von Männlichkeitsmustern auf politische Regime im 20. Jahrhundert.

Handschriften stellen eine unverzichtbare Primärquelle dar. Als direkte, handgeschriebene Zeugnisse fungieren sie als Fenster in die Vergangenheit und bewahren Geschichte, Sprache und Kultur. Zudem ermöglichen sie Einblicke in vergangene Zivilisationen, künstlerische Traditionen sowie die Weitergabe von Wissen. Während zunächst ihre Beschreibung in handschriftlichen und gedruckten Katalogen erfolgte, wurde im Zuge des Aufkommens digitaler Technologien die Erschließung von Manuskripten in Form von Datenbanken und deren Präsentation als Scans in digitaler Form vorgenommen. Die Relevanz solcher Kataloge, sei es in analoger oder elektronischer Form, kann nicht hoch genug eingeschätzt werden, denn sie stellen das Fundament für die Erforschung diverser Manuskriptkulturen in all ihren Aspekten dar. Mit Qalamos ist nun ein Online-Portal entwickelt worden, dessen Ziel darin besteht, diese heterogenen und verstreut liegenden Metadaten zu Manuskripten der Schrifttraditionen des Nahen Ostens, Asiens und Afrikas zusammenzuführen, die sich in allen deutschen Gedächtnisinstitutionen befinden. Darüber hinaus werden auch die Metadaten von Sammlungen internationaler Partner präsentiert. Die Vielfalt der nahöstlichen, asiatischen und afrikanischen Kulturen, Sprachen und Schriftzeichen manifestiert sich ebenfalls in der Mannigfaltigkeit der Formen ihrer Manuskripte. Neben Kodizes finden sich u.a. Rollen, Leporellos, lose Blätter, Textfragmente und Blockdrucke. Das Online-Portal bietet die Möglichkeit, diese über eine gemeinsame Oberfläche weltweit zugänglich und suchbar zu machen. Schon das Wort Qalamos ist Programm: Es vereint die verschiedenen Schreibweisen für das Schreibrohr zu einem Kunstwort und verweist auf die Verbindung der Handschriftentraditionen. Die Entwicklung des Portals Qalamos erfolgt im Rahmen eines Projekts, welches von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft von 2020 bis einschließlich 2026 gefördert wird. Die Gesamtverantwortung liegt bei der Orientabteilung der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Das Projekt konzentriert sich dabei zum einen auf den Aufbau einer Infrastruktur für die Manuskriptrecherche und zum anderen auf die Erstellung hochwertiger Metadaten. Dies erfolgt durch die Konvertierung von Katalogen und den Import bestehender elektronischer Beschreibungen, indem die sich dort befindliche Fülle an wertvollen Informationen in einer einheitlichen digitalen Datenstruktur in Übereinstimmung mit Bibliotheksstandards übertragen werden. Das Qalamos-Projekt bietet nicht nur Informationen zu den in Handschriften enthaltenen Texten und den daran beteiligten Personen sowie zur Materialität und künstlerischen Gestaltung der Objekte, sondern legt auch besonderen Wert auf die Darstellung der Wandergeschichte und Herkunft der Manuskripte. Der Vortrag möchte einen allgemeinen Einblick in das Portal Qalamos mit dessen Funktionalitäten geben. Die verschieden Recherchemöglichkeiten zu Manuskripten und die einzelnen Module der Datenstruktur sollen anhand von ausgewählten Beispielen aus der islamischen Manuskriptkultur vorgestellt werden. Im Rahmen der Erörterung werden auch einige Herausforderungen thematisiert, die mit dem Aufbau eines solchen Portals einhergehen. Abschließend wird ein Ausblick auf die zukünftige Entwicklung und Positionierung von Qalamos als Forschungsplattform für außereuropäische Handschriften gegeben.

Crónicas de una TRANSgresora»; a continuación, tendrá lugar un diálogo con Angela Mooney (Texas Woman’s University, Estados Unidos) sobre la migración desde México y América Latina hacia los Estados Unidos, así como sobre las correspondientes cuestiones sociopolíticas. Der Kaukasus ist eine Region von extrem hoher sprachlicher Diversität, in der über 40, teilweise stark bedrohte Minderheitensprachen gesprochen werden. Die beiden Linguist:innen vom Institut für Slawistik und Kaukasusstudien der Universität Jena, Diana Forker und Elguja Dadunashvili, nehmen auf Einladung der ÖAW-Kommission Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage die bedrohte Vielfalt in den Blick.
