Scientific research often intersects in complex and sometimes conflicting ways with cultural traditions, religious beliefs, or economic priorities. In such a context, tensions caused by misunderstanding and divergent opinions or interests can emerge. Bridging the gap between scientific pursuits and societal priorities and values is essential for responsible innovation and meaningful community engagement. Such conflicts appear across diverse fields, from astronomy and archaeology to environmental geosciences, highlighting the importance of conducting research with cultural awareness and fostering public understanding of science. Navigating these intersections is vital not only for the integrity of science but also for preserving public trust and promoting inclusive progress.

This seminar, When Science meets Society: Navigating Conflicting Interests, examines how these conflicts arise, how they can be addressed, and what lessons they offer. Through engaging talks and an interactive workshop, participants will explore real-world examples of clashes between scientific goals and societal priorities. Attendees will gain practical skills for navigating such disagreements, learn from examples, and develop a deeper appreciation for how dialogue and mutual respect can transform conflict into cooperation.
