ie.talks: The End of (US) Aid?

Discussing the Future of Aid and Crisis Response

ÖFSE, Alois-Wagner-Saal
Sensengasse 3/1, 1090 Wien

Diskussion, Round Table

Panel discussion in cooperation with ÖFSE - Austrian Foundation for Development Research. Panelists: Lisa Ann Richey (Copenhagen Business School), Karin Kuranda (AG Globale Verantwortung), and Zeric K. Smith (Retired Foreign Service Officer, USAID) followed by discussion, chaired by Lukas Schlögl (ÖFSE)

The U.S. government's unprecedented budget cuts to international cooperation have sent shockwaves around the globe. With the dismantling of USAID, vital funding for health, education, food security, disaster relief, and civil society support has dried up. Other countries, including major European donors, are also scaling back their commitments to international cooperation. Against this backdrop of drastic shifts in the global aid landscape, the panel discussion will explore four core issues:

- What major cuts have been implemented since the beginning of this year?

- What are the immediate effects on different countries?

- To which extent are these shifts driven by broader (geopolitical) power structures and struggles?

- What alternatives to formal aid structures are emerging?
