Paper Frontiers: Encountering the Turkic and Persian World in Muscovite Diplomatic Chancellery by Ulfat Abdurasulov

Antrittsvorlesung, Public Lecture, Vortrag
Abstract:
Unlike the early modern chancelleries of Central Asia, which left few surviving traces of their exchanges with Muscovy, the Posol’skii prikaz, the diplomatic chancellery of pre-Petrine Russia generated a remarkably rich documentary paper trial. These materials charts Muscovy’s vibrant interactions with polities stretching from Central Asia and the Caspian littoral to Safavid Iran and Mughal India. This session examines the chancery culture of Muscovy’s prePetrine diplomatic chancellery, with particular attention to how its personnel received, processed, and mediated diplomatic correspondence in Turkic and Persian.
