"The Life of the Yiddish Folksinger"

Jewish folklorists before the Holocaust collected many Yiddish songs from folksingers but left us with very little information about the performers: Who were they? How did they learn the songs? When did they sing? What did they think about the songs? In this talk, Dr. Gottesman will examine how Yiddish songs fit into the biographies of these folksingers, and how the context for Yiddish singing has changed.
