Title: Water Quality Challenges in South Australia

South Australia is known as the driest state in the driest inhabited continent. The South Australian Water Corporation (SA Water) provides water, recycled water and wastewater service to approximately 1.5 million people across South Australia. SA Water is a utility wholly owned by the Government of South Australia and the infrastructure includes:
• 29 water treatment plants,
• 26,277 km water mains,
• 8,638 km sewers,
• 25 wastewater treatment plants,
• water recycling plants.
During the past five years the presenter was the Principal Wastewater Treatment Engineer of SA Water and in this role he was responsible for the process design and process optimisation of SA Water’s wastewater treatment plants on a strategic level. The presentation will give a general overview on the water quality challenges in South Australia and some of SA Water’s key responses such like seawater desalination, stormwater harvesting, managed aquifer recharge and reuse schemes.
