Vortrag

Sure?vara was a direct student of ?a?kara and a celebrated commentator of some his works. He authored Nai?karmya Siddhi, an independent work, and two v?rttikas: on ?a?kara’s Brhad?ra?yakopani?ad-bh??ya and Taittir?yopani?ad-bh??ya. It appears from his works that he was a thorough and consistent ?a?karite who scarcely allowed diversion from the line of his master. Throughout his career Sure?vara debated with M?m??sakas, both the Bh???as and the Pr?bh?karas. He also confronted the followers of Ma??ana Mi?ra, a non-?a?karite and famous prasa?khy?na-v?din. One of the major topics of debate that is found in each and every of his works is vindication of the insight into the nature of self (jñ?na) as the sole means of achieving liberation. In his works, he proves himself to be a seasoned polemicist and a scholar of tremendous erudition. Sure?vara acts as a valuable link between ?a?kara and the later Advaita tradition.
