The Pussy Riot Case

The Peculiarities of Russian Post-Secularism

Universität Wien, HS 29, Hauptgebäude, 1.Stock
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Lecture

Dmitry Uzlaner analyzes the Russian debate surrounding the famous “punk-prayer” of the musical group Pussy Riot in February 2012 and the material of the court-trial of the group members. He argues that the case illustrates the peculiarities of the postsecular situation in Russia, in particular the existence of two religious-political normative models, an «official» model supported by state and Church powers and an «oppositional» model supported by political and Church opposition.

Dmitry Uzlaner is Associate Professor at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration Moscow, Russia
