This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore the relationship between postcolonial studies, English and Chinese studies in order to shed some light on identity formation processes in different geographic and thematic contexts. In addressing questions concerning the definition of national, local and global identities, we would like to examine which new impulses concepts such as the 'postnational' and the 'transcultural' can contribute to the ongoing debate. Furthermore, the conference investigates how processes of globalisation challenge traditional notions of citizenship, of national boundaries and of belonging. Via geographical and virtual border-crossings, we are forced to re-evaluate ideas of cultural identity and community building. Therefore, global and diasporic cultures are the sites of complex interplays of competing traditions and notions of identity.
Issues include but are not limited to:
– theoretical approaches to postcolonial history
– negotiations of local and global identities
– postnational and transcultural processes
– diasporic cultures and notions of identity
By assembling a variety of regional, disciplinary and temporal perspectives, the conference aims to offer broad reflections on the influence of postcolonial theory on English as well as on Asian/ Chinese studies.
Confirmed keynote speakers include Professor Andrea Riemenschnitter (author of Mythology, Modernity and the Nation in China’s Twentieth Century and Queer Transnationalism: Literary Anthropologies of the Contact Zone) and Professor Tobias Döring (author of Postcolonial Literatures in English: An Introduction and a co-editor of Figuren der/des Dritten. Erkundungen kultureller Zwischenräume).
