The general hypothesis of the lecture is: Economic inequality can only be explained if we see the close interaction between class stratification and ethnic differentiation; in sociological research, these two areas have usually been investigated in isolation from each other. The general thesis is supplemented by two specific hypotheses which are tested empirically in this paper: Economic inequality is lower in ethnic homogeneous countries and higher in ethnic heterogeneous countries; it is particularly high in countries with a history of ethnic exploitation in the form of slavery.
