Vortrag
Wackernagel's Law (WL), according to which enclitics occur second in a particular domain, has long been claimed to weaken between Homer and Classical Greek. I argue that there is no change in the distributional mechanism of second-position items in this period. The “exceptions” to WL that others have observed are the byproduct of constructions that extrapose an element of the sentence to a position before the clause start, e.g. topicalization. Change to the distributional patterns of second-position enclitics first occurs in the New Testament, and specifically in the context of pronominal objects of infinitives.
