With return migration, increasingly on the agenda of countries and international organizations in the ‘north’, particularly in Europe and North America, a research focus on return processes and experiences in the ‘south’ seem apt. Nyamadzawo Sibanda's research focuses on return migration within the Global South, specifically examining the south-south migration corridor. This approach aims to shift attention to an area that, despite being the site of most migratory mobilities, remains understudied in scientific and political debates. Using an actor-oriented approach, this PhD research investigates how migration motives and experiences influence and structure the return process and post-return (re)embeddedness of returnees. The study is set in Zimbabwe, a country with a long history of intra-regional migration in Southern Africa. This ie.talks will present emerging themes from ongoing research, including insights from fieldwork conducted in southwest Zimbabwe between February and August 2024. By exploring return migration in this context, the research contributes to a broader understanding of migration patterns and experiences within the Global South, challenging the predominant focus on north-south return migration.
