Memories of Mozambique in Germany - A Study for the Restitution of Sound Recordings

Hörsaal 2 des Instituts für Musikwissenschaft
Spitalgasse 2, Hof 9, 1090 Wien

Vortrag

A collection of more than two thousand objects was brought from Mozambique to Germany in 1932 as the result of an ethnological expedition carried out in 1931 by Günther Spannaus and Kurt Stülpner. After a long process, the ethnographic objects became the property of the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, and the sound recordings became the property of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in Berlin. About 90 minutes of sound were recorded by a phonograph in the community of Ndau people, in the central region of Mozambique. As part of my doctorate in ethnomusicology, I have been studying this material in Germany and Mozambique with a view to its repatriation/restitution. This talk will focus on the expedition itself, the fieldwork already carried out and the preliminary results achieved so far.
