The interdisciplinary symposium with elements from the arts will deal with contemporary ruination and decay. Ruins have long since lost their solemn serenity. They are also no longer perceived as aesthetically pleasing precursors of impending catastrophe or as a medium for reflecting on epherality and transience. Rather, we live in the midst of wars, irreversible climate change, and massive economic and ecological disasters. Ruins are what we live with and by. They are the downside of modernity, of extractivist economics, and the result of the neglect of state institutions. How can we deal with geopolitical processes that create abandoned spaces in one place and crowded centers in others? How should we respond to the collapse of infrastructures we took for granted: Transportation, energy, health services, heating? How susceptible to the ruinous are digital media? In short, what skills for living in ruins do we need to learn?
