Violent Flows: State and Water Infrastructures in the Port City of Buenaventura, Colombia (Felipe Fernández)

Hörsaal C, Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie (4. Stock)
Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

In this presentation, I will talk about the interweaving and overlapping of violence and water infrastructures in the port city of Buenaventura, in southwestern Colombia. By addressing the ways in which the state deprives larger parts of the population from water as a public good, my work demonstrates how the Colombian state reproduces forms of (infra)structural violence. At the same time, it analyzes the ways in which everyday crime threatens and alters the improvised material practices deployed by the population to build water storage systems. Based on extensive fieldwork material gathered between 2018 and 2020, my research contributes to the studies on infrastructure, urban poverty, and violence in Latin America and beyond.

The seminars will be held in a hybrid format, please check the event website for details.
