The lecture series “State and the Art. Current Cultural Politics in Hungary, Poland and Romania” addresses the present-day relationships between the state and the artists, museums, galleries, art critics and other persons working and engaging in the cultural sector in Central and East Europe.

Each of the three lectures focusses on the situation in one specific country, for instance the institutional and economic framework, national representation, or the influence of cultural and educational policy. This series aims to carefully examine the art policies of controversial, right-wing-conservative governments as those of Poland and Hungary and to question what kind of political implications such governments have for the artistic milieu of their countries. How do governments influence the production and perception of art? Is the cultural life in these countries limited by politics, or does it remain mostly autonomous? Which political directions have cultural and educational policies taken during the recent years? How do artists react to the political framework? A nuanced discussion of the relations between politics and art will show the differences between each country and also introduce the cultural politics of Romania (social-democratic government), which are rarely addressed in the media.
