On the occasion of its 10th Anniversary, the European Law Institute (ELI) will host Europe’s leading legal experts who will present and discuss ELI’s current and future work during an online Annual Conference from 6–8 September 2021.


The Conference will begin on 6 September with welcome addresses from Christiane Wendehorst (ELI President, Professor at the University of Vienna), Alexander Van der Bellen (Federal President of the Republic of Austria; video message) and Brigitta Zöchling-Jud (Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna).The keynote speech will be delivered by Marija Pejčinović Burić (Secretary General of the Council of Europe) with an emphasis on current challenges to human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. This will be followed by a Q&A session. The first Conference day will close with two webinars dedicated to topics of ever-growing importance, the data economy, and the much anticipated principles developed jointly by ELI and the American Law Institute (ALI), as well as the use of digital assets as security for credit.


Full day programmes on 7 and 8 September will allow for the following current and prospective ELI Projects to be discussed at length:

• Blockchain Technology and Smart Contracts

• Artificial Intelligence and Public Administration

• Admissibility of E-Evidence in Criminal Proceedings in the EU

• The Concept and Role of the Courts in Family and Succession Matters

• Climate Justice – New Challenges for Law and Judges

• Corporate Sustainability, Financial Accounting and Share Capital

• Ecocide

• ELI-Mount Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence

• Fundamental Constitutional Principles

• The Concept of Corporate Criminal Liability


The Conference will also see the presentation of the ELI Young Lawyers Award and the SIG and Hub of the Year Awards and will conclude with a closing ceremony, where the ELI Council election results will be announced and the ELI Presidency will be handed over. ELI is grateful to the City of Vienna, the University of the Vienna and the European Commission, among others, for supporting the event.
