Ringvorlesung Turkologie Wintersemester 2021/22
Turkey and Southeast Europe in the Interwar Period
As the title “Turkey and Southeast Europe in the interwar period” suggests, the series will concentrate on the late Ottoman and early post-Ottoman/Republican periods and bring together scholars that work on different aspects of that era of radical ruptures and new foundations. Related memory culture and history-writing in many cases still fundamentally disagree. The historical distance of a whole century however invites new or overarching approaches. The series thus aims at a fresh and interconnected understanding of the emerging post-Ottoman world in the large context of the defining Treaty of Lausanne (1923).

The Lausanne Treaty in Turkish official and popular historiography
Abstract
This lecture will offer some preliminary reflections on the conflicting arguments about the Lausanne Conference and Treaty (11.09.1922-24.07.1923) in Turkish official and popular historiography. It will suggest that the examples of popular historiography on this topic could be examined through the main identities of modern Turkish society or, in fact, the ‘war of identities.’ In this context, it will especially try to seek to understand the arguments of Kemalist and Neo-Kemalist, and the anti-Kemalists (Nationalist-Conservative/Islamists).
Bio
GÖKHAN ÇETİNSAYA is a political historian. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara University (1985); and received his PhD from the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at University of Manchester (1994). He was rewarded the Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Award for the Best PhD Dissertation in Social Sciences at the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) in 1994; and the Leigh Douglas Prize for the Best PhD Dissertation of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) in 1995.
He has worked in Hacettepe University (1986-2001), Istanbul Technical University (2002-2008), and Istanbul Şehir University (2009-2020). He has been a visiting scholar at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies (2001); the Free University of Berlin, Institute for Turcology (2004); and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Washington DC, 2007-2008). His publications include The Ottoman Administration of Iraq, 1890-1908 (London: Routledge, 2006).
