Workshop Trans-border Communities

Belonging and political membership across India’s borders

Alte Kapelle am Campus der Universität Wien
Spitalgasse 2-4 / Hof 2.8, 1090 Wien

Seminar, Workshop, Kurs

This workshop will focus on the interplay between transnationality, belonging and political membership in south Asia, more particularly across Indian borders, through local people’s experience in the past and today. It is an outcome of the research project Trans-border religion. Re-composing Limbu rituals in the Nepal–Sikkim borderlands, funded by the Austrian Science Funds and hosted at CIRDIS, University of Vienna (a brief presentation of the project is given below). The workshop aims at deepening our understanding of the specificity of the Himalayan borders by contrasting them with other Indian and south-Asian borders, in an area stretching from the Himalayas until Bangladesh and Burma. It will thus contribute to situating the broader theoretical significance of the case study and the potential contribution of the research to border studies at large.
