Life-Writing in Poetry

Two Biographies of the Nineteenth Century

,

Lecture

Charles Darwin and Ludwig Van Beethoven – two giants of the 19th century in their respective fields – are brought together in this poetry lecture by eminent British author Ruth Padel, Professor of Poetry at King’s College London. Among Padel’s many critically acclaimed works are Darwin – A Life in Poems (2009) and Beethoven Variations: Poems on a Life (2020). In this lecture, Padel will read from her biographical poetry and reflect on the process of approaching nineteenth-century lives as a poet.

This event is open to the public and forms part of the lecture series “Celebrity & Memory: Victorian & Neo-Victorian Perspectives”, which brings together international Neo-Victorian scholars and writers of (bio-)fiction and poetry to explore a variety of cultural texts that re-imagine the nineteenth century and thus interrogate our ideological investments in the past.
