Resources present a peculiar way of thinking about matter. Essentially, any kind of raw material – from water and wood to precious ores, crude oil, or rare earths – can be transformed into a resource through a sequence of material, epistemic, and economic processes. The conference will address resources as the product imaginations, narratives and epistemic operations. How are certain goods and materials transformed into resources? What imaginaries and what types of narratives have formed around them and enabled their extraction and marketing? How has a certain use of materials as resources led to the ecological and economical crisis we have come to call the Anthropocene? We will look at the ideological and epistemic frameworks that have created a world of resources in order to understand mechanisms of their exploitation and circulation.
