Musical imagery—hearing music in your mind that isn’t playing in the environment—is a common yet complex experience that takes many forms. Recent research on musical imagery, however, has emphasized the specific contents and descriptive qualities of these experiences, such as what music is being imagined or the subjective valence of the experience. Less attention has been given to the underlying processes of musical imagery. In my talk, I will discuss the process of mental control as it pertains to musical imagery. In the first portion, I will present findings about people’s subjective experiences of perceived and self-reported abilities to control their musical imagery experiences from experience-sampling research. In the second portion, I will discuss my more recent work using behavioral measures of mental control.
