Vortrag

Seventy-four years after the end of the Second World War, war memory remains contested in East Asia. As television in Japan has a reputation of being somewhat politically tame, it may, for producers, seem to be the safer bet to not mention the war at all, yet programmes dealing with it continue to be broadcast. Focussing on representations of the Japanese Empire on Japanese television, I will aim to work out to what extent the representations can be seen as indicative of self-censorship.

Dr Griseldis Kirsch is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Japanese Culture at SOAS University of London. Her latest publication is “Recreating Memory? The Drama Watashi wa kai ni naritai and Its Remakes” (published in: Blai Guarné, Artur Lozano-Méndez, and Dolores P. Martinez, eds. Persistently Postwar: Media and the Politics of Memory in Japan. Oxford, New York: Berghahn Books, p. 85-102).
