Vortrag

Ethnography is an exercise of multidimensional exposure. Based on an analysis of Michelangelo Antonioni’s awarded film Blow Up, I will consider exposure in a triple meaning: as an uncovering of facts; as a communication with a public; as risk taking for the researcher. What are these various processes? How can critique be inserted in the ethnography, and how critical can it be for the ethnographer? These questions will be discussed in light of ethnographies conducted with the police and within a prison in France as well as on the study of cases drawn from the anthropological literature.

Didier Fassin is the James Wolfensohn Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study and a Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Anthropologist, sociologist and physici-an, he has conducted research in Senegal, South Africa, Ecuador, and France. Author of sixteen books, he was awarded the Gold Medal in anthropology at the Swedish Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was the first social scientist to receive the Nomis Distinguished Scientist Award. He recently autho-red Enforcing Order. An Ethnography of Urban Policing (Polity, 2013), Prison Worlds. An Ethnography of the Carceral Condition (Polity, 2016), Life. A Critical User’s Manual (Polity, 2018), and The Will to Pu-nish (Oxford University Press, 2018).
