Vortrag

Music therapy is an old discipline that has received new support from research into music and emotions. The ability to facilitate synchronisation and social bonding suggests a role of music in evolution. Music is a social art, and many mental disorders have a social aspect. In this talk, I will summarise our group’s research on the effects of music therapy in the areas of autism, depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. In most of these areas, systematic reviews of RCTs, including Cochrane reviews, have shown promising effects on symptoms as well as social relationships. However, large, pragmatic multinational trials have often shown mixed effects or are still lacking. Therefore, process-outcome research and translational research is needed to improve our understanding of the mechanisms through which music therapy achieves its effects.
