The role of academics in a globalized world

Symposium in the frame of the Vienna mission of the European Centre for Economic, Academic & Cultural Diplomacy.

Universität Wien, Sky-Lounge
Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1090 Wien

Tagung, Konferenz, Kongress, Symposium

As globalization progresses, the politicians of nation states are increasingly losing power and influence. On the one hand, this leads to fragmentation of societies and regional tendencies towards separatism. On the other, decentralised networks gain more significance.

Universities and their scholars are global actors in their own right and are called upon by politicians and society to contribute to solving the grand challenges. However, scholars are researchers, but also teachers who are significantly responsible for the education of young people, global citizens of the future. How does globalization affect their teaching? What role do they play in the context of globalization? Is it still legitimate to limit themselves to observation and research or should they play a more active, even more creative, role as global actors and take an open position?

Five professors, three from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and two from the University of Vienna will talk about research on current social developments and what roles scientists play in it. The opening statements will deal on the one hand with tensions between values and the economy, and on the other hand with the possible, permissible or impermissible positions of scientists. The lectures and subsequent discussion will show how academia can play a role in the public debate rooted in its research.
