Public Lecture by André Bächtiger

Communication and Deliberation in Experimental Settings

Aula am Campus der Universität Wien
Spitalgasse 2-4 / Hof 1.11, 1090 Wien

Antrittsvorlesung, Public Lecture

Recent years have seen a proliferation of deliberation and communication experiments in the social sciences. While communication experiments in experimental economics usually satisfy the demanding conditions of proper experimental research (SUTVA), they have failed to explore the effects of more demanding concepts of communication - such as argumentation and its transformative power - on social and political outcomes. By contrast, most deliberative experiments do not qualify as true experiments (Esterling 2018); yet they have set out to explore links between argumentation and a wide variety of normatively interesting outcomes. In my talk, I try to sketch pathways whether and how we can turn deliberation/argumentation into a truly experimental logic without doing violence to its rich normative dimensions.
