Seminar, Workshop, Kurs

In the field of textile archaeometry, research on textile dyeing is based on interdisciplinary cooperation with experts in chemistry, biology, history, archaeology, the history of arts, conservation and restoration. National and international projects deal with the question how cultural textile objects from prehistoric times up to the beginning of the 20th century were dyed. Aim of these research projects is to enlarge the knowledge of dyeing tech-niques by analysing the dyes and fibres of textile objects, by studying written sources, such as dyeing recipes and patents, and by performing dyeing experiments. In cultural heritage research the gained knowledge can be applied in order to get information on the history of an object, to clarify causes of colour fading, bleeding and fibre degradation.

The lecture will give an overview of historical textile dyeing techniques as well as of analytical methods applied for studying these techniques. The result of comprehensive research projects will be presented such as those on Bronze and Iron Age textiles from the prehistoric salt mines of Hallstatt in Upper Austria (Figure), on textiles from Late Antique Egypt and on silk fabrics of the T'ang Dynasty from the Famen temple near X'ian in China. Furthermore, investigations of several textile objects from museum collections will be discussed.
