The Jewish family of the Tobiads ran in the third century B.C.E. a business that pursued in Ptolemaic Coele-Syria animal husbandry, tax farming and other affairs. The book of Nehemiah shows that already in Persian times a Tobiad governed the Ammonitis. New cuneiform finds document not only a Mesopotamian branch of the Tobiad family but allow also to trace the family back into the sixth century B.C.E. The Tobiads were among the most influential families in the history of Judaism. They were global players who had a significant impact on the history of Mesopotamia and the eastern Mediterranean. The Institute for Jewish studies of Vienna University organizes together with the Institute for Ancient History and the Institute for Oriental Studies a symposium dedicated to the Tobiads from October 30th-31st 2017. Based on all ancient sources, for the first time, the Symposium wants to reconstruct the history of the Tobiads including their businesses and politicking from the sixth through the second centuries B.C.E. The symposium asks furthermore for the cultural and religious impact of the Tobiads.
