Vortrag

Jonathan Culler (BA. Harvard; B.Phil und D.Phil, Oxford) lehrte in Cambridge und Oxford, bevor er die Nachfolge von M.H. Abrams als Class of 1916 Professor of English an der Cornell Universität antrat. Er ist Autor zahlreicher Standardwerke zu Strukturalismus und Poststrukturalismus; sein Einführungswerk Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction (erweiterte Ausgabe 2011) wurde in 26 Sprachen übersetzt. Sein neuestes Werk ist die 2015 erschienene Monographie Theory of the Lyric.

Kurzbeschreibung des Vortrags:

Compared to theoretical work on narrative, we have had little theoretical work on the lyric. My recent Theory of the Lyric (Harvard University Press, 2015), which this lecture summarizes and explores, is an attempt to advance thinking in this field. Starting with a handful of highly canonical lyrics, I attempt to work out a general framework for thinking about the Western lyric tradition which attends to the most distinctive features of lyric discourse, including its strange modes of address, which are often neglected by one of the narrow models of lyric that have in recent years organized most approaches to lyric poetry.
