MATTHEW RATCLIFFE

has been Professor for Theoretical Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy and Education since April 2015.

1991– 94 studied Philosophy and Psychology (BA) at Durham University. 1994 – 99 studied History and Philosophy of Science (MPhil and then PhD) at the University of Cambridge. 2000 – 02 Lecturer in Philosophy at University College Cork. 2002 – 15 Lecturer, Senior Lecturer (promoted 2006), Reader (promoted 2007), and then Professor (promoted 2009) at the Department of Philosophy, Durham University.

Research areas and current research topics:

Phenomenology; philosophy of psychiatry; philosophy of mind.

Emotions, feelings, and moods; intersubjectivity and empathy; hallucinations and delusions; the sense of touch; the nature of grief.
