Präsentation

Playing with Nan is the story of a young Nepali man who migrated to work in a Nepali restaurant in northern Japan. The film explores his daily life at work and his family at home, which reflects sociocultural problems related to globalization. Twenty-eight years ago, Ram was born in a rural village in Nepal. Working on the farm Ram saw little hope apart from surviving in poor conditions. He heard a beautiful story from a restaurant owner about the work and earning opportunities in Japan. He paid the owner US$ 20,000 to buy a work visa to enter in Japan. Several dramatic consequences occurred within Ram’s life and his family’s after his migration to Japan. The most distinct quality of this film is realism. The story of the film comes from the character’s point of view. The film audiences can hear and feel the characters’ language, tone, and gesture.

Dipesh Kharel got his Masters degree in visual anthropology and documentary film studies at the University of Tromso, Norway and is now working as ethnographer and an independent filmmaker based in Nepal. He has already produced several award-wining films which have been screened at several international film festivals around the world. Currently, Dipesh is also a PhD candidate at the University of Tokyo, doing visual ethnography of Nepali immigrants in Japan.

Asami Saito is working as a film editor and visual researcher at Media Help Line, a film production company in Nepal. She has studied ethnographic film and cross cultural research at University of Tromso in Norway. “Playing with Nan” is her first film as a director.
