This presentation will deal with affect as a dimension of the social by focusing on how racism is played out in work contexts. It will do this by engaging with household and academic labour. Some consideration will be given to the emotional impact of migration control policies and institutional racism.

Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez holds a Dr.Phil. in Sociology from the Johann-Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main, Germany. She is Chair in Sociology at the Justus-Liebig University, Giessen. Previous to this appointment she worked as a Senior Lecturer in Transcultural Studies at the University of Manchester. She is author of Migration, Domestic Work and Affect (2010) and Intellektuelle Migrantinnen (1999). She is the co-editor of several books including Decolonizing European Sociology (2010, with M. Boatc? and S. Costa) and Spricht die Subalterne Deutsch? Migration und Postkoloniale Kritik (2003, with H. Steyerl) and Creolizing Europe (2015, with S.A. Tate).
