Vortrag

Currently psychology - and not only this discipline – is beset with a crisis of confidence, or of replication, showing that many of the discipline’s central findings cannot be replicated and therefore probably are wrong. Publication bias, i.e., the tendency of authors to write up, of reviewers to positively review, and of editors to publish, studies reporting significant effects seems to be the main reason for this crisis. We show that publication bias afflicts the entire field of psychology. However, replications are doomed to fail not only because of non-existent effects, but also because their existence depends on a peculiar mixture of conditions, which have to be reproduced exactly for a successful replication. This problem comes under the heading of reproducibility. It appears that both, true effects and detailed descriptions of the experimental regime facilitate replicability
