Efforts to create inclusive opportunities for students with intellectual disability and autism necessitate the need for new models of supporting students in these settings. Advances in the disability field, namely, the emergence of social-ecological models of disability, and the growing body of research on effective inclusive practices provides direction for educators working to include students with intellectual disability and autism in secondary schools. This contribution will discuss the emergence of strengths-based approaches for understanding intellectual disability and autism and the role of such approaches in developing new educational models that focus on the school wide provision of high quality instruction, with more intensive instruction as needed for students who need additional supports.
