Simulation of Congo Conference 1884-1885
new interpretation
Vienna International Center
Wagramer Straße 5, 1400 Wien
Tagung, Konferenz, Kongress, Symposium
1. This simulation game is an approximation to reality. Games need
rules - please maintain respectful communication and interaction, even
during negotiations with opposing powers.
2. Try to become your player - the success of the simulation depends on
that! How does your player dress for a conference, what kind of items
can show your identity (flags at the negotiation table, etc.)? BE
CREATIVE and take decorative elements to the simulation. It will
CREATE A SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE!
3. You will negotiate based on the role and interests of your player. The goal of the simulation is a joint document. The big topic is a definition of
the rules which should be applied to the formal and legitimate
occupation of a territory on the African continent.
4. You as students should develop a better and deeper understanding of
how processes and structures in history work. Therefore you are selected
to act as one of the possible agents in these historic debate. I am
convinced that learning by doing is a key feature and that contents you
research yourself not only on a theoretical basis but rather on a practical
way will stay in a more sustainable way in your mind.
5. Don´t forget that the debate is some sort of game. The goal is to come
as close to reality as it is possible for you. Give your best to act in the
way you are convinced the various stakeholders from second half of the
19th century would have acted.
6. In the end: Try to think and speak as a historic character. This possibly
opens up your minds and also your understandings for the mechanisms
of the times of imperialism. It will help you to strenghten your expertise
and skills in organization and presentation techniques.
