Governments and funders are demanding the use of evidence-based programs in human services (education, social services, and health). Researchers have responded and have developed an increasing array of effective innovations. Unfortunately, human service outcomes have remained relatively unchanged despite persistent efforts to use science in typical practice settings. In the past 20 years this has led to the elaboration of a science of implementation. Implementation science focuses on usable innovations, implementation drivers, implementation stages, improvement cycles, implementation teams, and enabling change. This new science incorporates key functions from intervention science, improvement science, and complexity theory. Implementation science and its uses to move science into service will be described in this presentation and discussion.
Dean L. Fixsen, PhD, and Karen A. Blase, PhD, have spent their careers developing and implementing evidence-based programs, initiating and managing change processes in provider organizations and service delivery systems, and working with others to improve the lives of children, families, and adults. They are co-authors of the highly regarded monograph,
Implementation Research: A Synthesis of the Literature. Karen Blase and Dean Fixsen have served on numerous editorial boards and have advised federal, state, and local governments. Dean Fixsen and Karen Blase are Senior Scientists at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Co-Founders of the National Implementation Research Network. Dean Fixsen is President of the Global Implementation Initiative.
