Vortrag
Geophysical data including high-resolution seismic tomography and reflection seismic data together with the surface geology portray significant lateral changes of crustal and lithosphere structure along strike of the Alps. For example it has been suggested that the subduction polarity changes laterally from southeasterly-directed subduction of the European mantle lithosphere in the central Alps to north-easterly dipping subduction of the Adriatic mantle lithosphere underneath the Eastern Alps. The consequences of such profound changes in lithospheric mantle dynamics for first-order deformation patterns in the crust are investigated using physical models. Additionally, we aim at gaining insight in the interplay between subduction and lateral extrusion processes as exemplified in the Eastern Alps.
