The end of the monograph?

Changing publication strategies in the social sciences

Early Stage Researchers’ Day at the Faculty of Social Sciences

Mensa NIG (7th floor)
Universitätsstrasse 7, 1010 Vienna

Diskussion, Round Table

It is undisputed that social scientists need to publish research results in relevant peer-reviewed scientific journals when pursuing an academic career. When is the best time to start publishing as an early stage researcher and where? What are the pros and cons of writing a thesis by journal publication or, conversely, of writing a monograph? How do changing publication strategies affect the preparation of a habilitation thesis? And, what if a career in academia is not the primary objective?

This year, the Early Stage Researchers’ Day at the Faculty of Social Sciences addresses these and further questions by bringing together senior scientists, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates and representatives from research funding agencies. In a panel discussion, they will debate their experiences from different perspectives. They will also critically address the fact that publication strategies vary considerably across and even within social science disciplines.

Moreover, the Sowi-Doc.Awards 2019 will be awarded during this event. Early stage researchers of the Faculty of Social Sciences will present their ongoing or completed doctoral research in a poster exhibition. The participants are invited to a small reception after the event.
