The topic of violence has received considerable attention

in the last decade in phenomenology and continental philo-

sophy of religion. To apply phenomenology to the questi-

on of religious violence, however, has thus far remained a desideratum. Phenomenology without a doubt has a long

tradition in studying the modes of religious experience,

and the last 30 years especially have contributed to a fe-

cund trove of exploring religious experience as such, and

its key concepts (e.g. transcendence, gift/givenness, adora-

tion, sovereignty, love, or the verticality of religious expe-

rience). Yet this sub-field has hardly contributed to current

debates on the role of religion in our contemporary socie-

ties, not to mention, of religious violence. It is the major aim of workshop to elaborate on the potential phenomeno-

logical research has to be applied to such topics. To begin this challenging venture, the contributions to this work- shop will: investigate a variety of related phenomena; dis- cuss them from various phenomenological (yet highly transdisciplinary) viewpoints; and assess critically the ca- pacities of phenomenology in general to give an account of these problematics.
