Vortrag

The lecture will address the impact of experiences of various interrelated mobilities on visual arts in the Slovenian diaspora in Argentina. It will explore the main question of how artistic creativity is related to individual and collective experiences of migration, life in diaspora, return mobilities and transnational connections. It approaches art as processual, relational and embedded in broader social, political and cultural contexts. Such an analysis facilitates not only an understanding of individual experiences and worldviews, but also of the broader conceptualisation of art within particular socio-historical contexts. By juxtaposing art production with life histories and trajectories as well as broader socio-historical contexts, the lecture will address intersections and correspondences between mobility and visual art and question how artists in diaspora imagine, express and constitute their relations with the homeland and their understanding of the past.

Jaka Repic is associate professor and researcher at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. He finished his PhD thesis in 2006 with research on transnational migrations between Argentina and Europe, mainly focused on Slovene diaspora in Argentina and contemporary return mobilities. His research interests are transnational migrations, Slovenian diaspora, social memories, urbanisation processes, interethnic relations and anthropology of art.
