Vortrag

While Islamophobia or anti-Muslim racism is not a new phenomenon at all, the last couple of decades have witnessed a steady and alarmingly expansion of anti-Muslim hatred throughout Western societies. Many scholars have pointed out not only the wide dissemination of perceptions deeming Islam and Muslims as incompatible with, and threatening Western societies, but also the effects of such representations in different arenas (media representation, access to labor and education, everyday violence, institutional settings, etc.). Against this background, little has been said about how Muslims experience, navigate, and actively counter everyday racism and discrimination. Based on interviews conducted with young Muslims in Germany, the lecture engages with the different and highly creative strategies, narratives, and actions countering and challenging the manifestations of Islamophobia in contemporary Germany.
