In Search for Legitimacy:
Faith-based Humanitarian Organizations in Austria, Germany and Pakistan

Seminarraum Internationale Entwicklung [Afrikawissenschaften]
Spitalgasse 2/Hof 5 , 1090 Wien

Vortrag

The management of humanitarian action has become more and more important due to the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters and armed conflicts. Addressing humanitarian needs effectively requires the commitment and competence of all of the actors involved, including faith-based organizations whose roles and capacities influence, and are influenced by the level of their legitimacy.

This presentation focuses on whether and to what extent faith-based humanitarian organizations, which make up an important part of the humanitarian community, are perceived as legitimate in the countries in which they are headquartered and the countries in which they provide humanitarian assistance. It also addresses how different types of faith-based humanitarian organizations attempt to gain or maintain legitimacy.

Data for this presentation was collected between October 2010 and August 2016 from secondary sources and in-depth interviews with donors, representatives, staff, and voluntaries of Caritas, Muslims Help (Muslime Helfen), and Islamic Community Millî Görü? (Islamische Gemeinschaft Milli Görüs) in Austria, Germany, and Pakistan; governmental agencies and well-established humanitarian NGOs in these countries; and local cooperation partners and beneficiaries of humanitarian aid in Pakistan.
